Remi es un niño francés que había sido raptado cuando era un bebé y entregado luego al señor y a la señora Barberin en Chavanon, un pueblo en el centro de Francia. La señora Barberin cría a Remi como si fuera hijo suyo.
Cuando Remi tiene ocho años el señor Barberin, quien está desempleado, lisiado y tiene problemas de alcoholismo, vende a Remi a Vitalis, un actor ambulante, mientras la señora Barberin se encontraba fuera de casa. El señor Vitalis y Remi presentan espectáculos en diversos pueblos de Francia y España junto a sus tres perros amaestrados (Capi, Servino y Dulce) y un mono llamado Corazón Alegre. Con el tiempo Remi llega a considerar al señor Vitalis como su padre.
